DESIGN
This innovative housing project is designed to provide a safe and nurturing environment for refugees affected by the recent earthquake in Syria. Inspired by the warmth of traditional Islamic architecture, the design features a central courtyard that fosters community bonding and social interaction among residents.
Key Features
The project includes rooftop gathering spaces with fabric shades, allowing residents to grow essential plants and promoting self-sufficiency. Structural safety is prioritized through a robust system of beams and columns with isolated foundations, mitigating the impact of future earthquakes. At the heart of the design is a school that ensures easy access for children, complemented by social spaces that help reintegrate younger generations into the community. Playgrounds provide safe recreational areas, while multipurpose halls, gender-specific gyms, and workshops empower residents with skills to rebuild their lives.
Community and Culture
The market area, inspired by traditional Syrian souks, consists of four buildings with enclosed courtyards that reduce noise and enhance accessibility for trade. Rooftop cafés overlooking the main courtyard create vibrant social hubs. Healthcare facilities are integrated to meet residents’ needs, while the main courtyard promotes a healthier lifestyle with shaded seating and five symbolic trees—lemon, orange, olive, white poplar, and grapevine—representing Syrian culture and economy. The design also emphasizes environmental sustainability by transplanting olive trees from the site into the courtyard, preserving the region’s heritage. The choice of green as the primary building color symbolizes growth, prosperity, hope, and renewal. Overall, this project aims to provide shelter and foster community participation, reinforcing the message: “You will not have to move again.”
